10 Habits Of A Successful Mom

A little over a year ago, I got the best promotion I could have ever asked for! I decided to hang up my suits and traded them in for sweats, I retired straightened hair for a bun on top of my head, I said goodbye to clients and hello to a cute baby, I put money away and let all of the hugs and cuddles come my way. I was very sad to leave the best company EVER – But I finally got to live my dream job… I became A MOM.I have held a lot of great jobs that I have LOVED in my life! From my first job at a Scrapbook Store when I was 15 years old, to a Sales Manager at one of the most beautiful, 5 Diamond hotels on the Las Vegas strip – I found happiness. With each and every role that I held, I tried my very best to be as successful as possible. I worked hard and always tried to get that next promotion that opened up.

Over the past year, I have learned {and continue to learn DAILY} on how to be the most successful mom possible. Not “successful” like with an abundance of wealth or riches, but “successful” as happiness and satisfaction. To me, a successful mom may not have all of the money in the world, but is a mom who finds joy each day with her children, as she treasures her role in motherhood.

Today we have 10 Habits Of A Successful Mom. A few things that you can think about to become the happiest mother possible.

10 Habits of a Successful Mom

1. TAKE TIME FOR YOU: It is SO important to take time for yourself. Mom’s lives can get so busy with cleaning, cooking, running errands and playing, all while trying to deal with finances, kissing boo-boos and singing songs. Do something you love EVERY day. After the kids are down, take a few minutes for yourself. Read a book. Take a warm bath. Go to Target. Call your mom or friend. Do something you LOVE. Your health and your sanity is extremely important, so you can take care of your babies the next day.

2. LIFE IS BETTER WHEN YOU’RE LAUGHING: Learn to laugh. Nothing is going to be perfect – there are going to be days where you actually just want to cry! But learn to laugh. We all make mistakes – but everything works out. I find it helpful to laugh in some of the most stressful situations. In fact, one day I was running out the door and Laila had a dirty diaper, so I ran back in to change her. That was when I noticed it was not only a dirty diaper… but it was a dirty BODY. It was EVERYWHERE. So I put her in the bath and cleaned her up… right when I was getting the towel, she pooped AGAIN. But this time, it wasn’t all over her, but it was IN THE BATH! For her health and safety, I pulled her out as I cleaned the tub. I honestly wanted to cry – but I decided I just needed to laugh. The situation just kept getting worse and worse, I wanted to give up! But I found as I laughed about it… everything seemed to be okay.

life is better when you are laughing

3. IT’S ALL ABOUT THE SCHEDULE: I find that my most successful days as a mom are the days I wake up early and get going quickly. I love getting showered in the morning so I can start my daily check-list of things to do. Get into a routine of waking up and doing what you need to do. I have a crazy obsession with my kitchen. It HAS to be clean before I do anything. So, I wake up and clean the kitchen each morning. That way if nothing gets done the rest of the day, at least I feel good about something. Find out what kind of schedule works best for you and stick with it.

4. FOCUS ON FAMILY: Family should always come first. Your spouse and your children should be your very first priority. “Let your first interest be in your home. The baby you hold in your arms will grow quickly as the sunrise and the sunset of the rushing days,” said Gordon B. Hinckley. Take time for your children. Have them sit on your lap and read a book. Get on your hands and knees and play with their blocks and trucks. The more time you spend with them, the more your love for them will grow, and the happier and more successful mom you will be.

5. GIRLS JUST WANNA HAVE FUN…AND THAT IS OKAY: Not only is it okay, but it is a good thing! Leave the kids with your husband, mom, friend, babysitter – and have a little Girls Night Out! I remember the first time I left Laila, I seriously almost had a meltdown. I missed her so much! Get out and have fun with your lady friends. It is good for you to still have friends and to still socialize. You totally deserve it too!

6. CREATE A HAPPY, HEALTHY HOUSE: I once saw a sign that said, “Please excuse the mess, my kids are busy making memories.” I love that! Although it is so important to have a clean house, I am a big believer in creating a happy house too. Often times, I will get done mopping our floors and suddenly little toes come running down the hall that I JUST cleaned. Permanent little feet marks are always on my wood floors. It use to stress me out – but then I realized that it is okay! Our houses don’t need to be perfect – one day we will miss those little feet and hand marks.

7. DONT WORRY ABOUT THE JONESES: I wrote an article about comparing ourselves to our friends lives that we see on Social Media, that you can read here. Always remember we don’t see EVERYTHING. Just because someone’s life looks flawless on Facebook, doesn’t mean that is truly how it is. Everyone has trials. Everyone has bad days. Stop comparing and just do your best.

8. CALL FOR HELP: I have learned that it is okay to ask for help. In fact, we can’t do it alone. If you don’t have a husband to call – call your mom, call a friend, call a neighbor. We all need support. Someone to talk to, a shoulder to cry on, a person to make us laugh. Reach out for help and don’t be shy. I use to think I needed to be SUPER MOM and do everything all on my own, but I quickly learned that I can’t do it ALL, I need some serious help!

9. LEARN HOW TO SAY “NO”: This is a hard one for me, but I am slowly learning how to say it. Successful moms know where to draw the line in service, in party planning, in recreation, in volunteering, in church, in EVERYTHING. As you get wrapped up in special events and groups – people will seek for your help and ask you to make dinner for someone, plan a program, drop the kids off and then pick them up and babysit all in one day. It is okay to say “no” sometimes. You can’t do it all. Only put as much as you can handle into your schedule.

10. DO WHAT YOU CAN DO, IN THE BEST WAY YOU KNOW: Lastly, just do your very best! My mom texted me this quote the other day and it brought me a lot of comfort. It said, “I feel to invited women everywhere to rise to the great potential within you. I do not ask that you reach beyond your normal capacity. I hope you will not nag yourselves with thoughts of failure. I hope you will not try to set goals beyond your capacity to achieve. I hope you will simply do what you can do, in the best way you know. If you do so, you will witness miracles come to pass.”

These 10 habits are the perfect start for you to become the most successful mom! “Successful mothers are not the ones that have never struggled. They are the ones that never give up, despite the struggles.” – Sharon Jaynes

Don’t Be Shy

This Sunday was a fun day with my mini me.  As many of you might know I have done a little modeling in the past and have also tried my hand at styling local fashion shoots. Everytime that I would be at a shoot I would take Shy with me. Ever since she saw the process and the fun of taking pictures, she’s been posing ever since. So this week it was no surprise to me that she wanted to have a mini shoot with me. It was such a fun bonding time and I think that the pictures speak for themselves. I’m sure there will be more shoots to come with this little model in the making.

Don’t Be Shy!

One of the reasons  I created this blog,  was to stay connected with my first love, my daughter Shy. We have so much in common at this point and I wanted to document every moment that I can. I tell her all the time that she is my BEST FRIEND and I truely mean it from the bottom of my heart, to the top of my toes. In honor of her I have created a weekly segment that you will see posted every Sunday called, “Don’t Be Shy.”

As a mom that works full-time and is a full-time student, time is not something that is on my side. It’s a constent struggle to fit everything into 24 hours. As many of you moms know out their multi tasking and staying organized is the key. However, there are those times that you have to STOP and focus on what’s important. So I decided that I would take at least one day out of the week and not do any work, homework, cleaning and all the other chores that never seem to end. I decided that Sunday’s would be Shy time. Shy gets to decide what we will do and really it’s just a great excuss to spend the whole day with my BEST FRIEND.

So here is what Shy wanted to do……

Pinterest Beauty Hacks

I was searching through Youtube looking for a beauty video that wasn’t the typical type of video. I don’t know about you but I’ve watch some boring tutorials that were way to long. Being a mom of a four year old, I don’t have time to waste so this time I took note of the lengths of the videos and titles to feel out which ones I wanted to watch. I was in luck to find a video that not only was under 10 min but also incorporated every moms favorite pinning site, Pinterest.

I love Pinterest and have used many of the tutorials and recipes on the site. In my experience, all the ones that I have tried have worked but was very interested to see if in fact there would be some that wouldn’t. The video blog that I found was created by RachhLoves. She is really creative with her approach to the tutorials are very funny in a clumsy type of way. The title of the video is, “5 Pinterest Beauty Hacks Tested.” See how the title draws you in? I had to see if they would work or not and with limited amount of time to put on makeup, I thought this would give me a chance to find some quick and easy ways to add to my beauty routine.

The video is also a great indication of the new media that is out there for us moms to make our lives easier. Just because we have kids doesn’t mean we can’t take the time to pamper ourselves even if it is just finding a great way to make your lip stick pop or how to make a gel eyeliner from the solid one that you have in your makeup bag. The way that this video uses new media effectively, is by incorporating the new video craze, showing tutorial and how it works but it also incorporates a social media platform that many of us are aware of. By incorporating Pinterest it gives us a great reference to go to, to see if there are tricks or hacks out their that will work. Check out the video and when I find more, I’ll share…….Stay tuned.

Tom Ford Chooses L.A. over London?

So where was Beyonce, Gwyneth Paltrow, Scarlett Johansson, Jennifer Lopez, Miley Cyrus, Reese Witherspoon, Anjelica Huston, Tracee Ellis Ross, Julianne Moore, Sofia Vergara and Amber Valletta on Friday February 20th 2015 at 7:00pm. Well you see, there is this designer by the name of Tom Ford and he was having a fashion show for his Fall/Winter Collection.

On a serious note this wasn’t  just another Tom Ford show that you would have traveled to in London, this time of year. For one this show was no where near the U.K. This year Ford decided to show off his collection on the West Coast. Denim, fringe, chevron motifs and leopard prints with the glitz and glam of Hollywood.

White rose petals scattered the L.A. runway. The collection was a tribute to old Hollywood glamour and the grit of the old Sunset Strip. If you think about it, this sums up what many think of L.A. There is the wrong side of the tracks and the right side of the tracks and Ford steered right down the middle, with the melding of the two. One would say this is the best of both worlds in fashion and a nice change of pace with the show being so close to home, for many A list stars that wore many past years collections to the show, in support of the designer.

Now the big question is, will there be many more Tom Ford shows in L.A. and other California destinations to come? I guess we’ll just have to wait and see. A girl can always hope, dream right?

AAU Fall 2015 Mercedes- Benz Fashion Week

This year AAU chose fourteen students to premier their thesis collections at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. This has been such a great opportunity for past and present students to get their work out to the masses, a dream come true to all. Since 2005, AAU has granted students the availability to show their work to their peers and the fashion elite. This year, according to Simon Ungless, Executive Director of the School of Fashion, these fourteen designers focus was on transformation. “They are using fabric manipulation and printing techniques to change the inherent qualities of textiles to create new textures and surface qualities. There is a focus back to the body and wearability in silhouette, which the designers have utilized advanced tailoring techniques to achieve.

This was represented beautifully in the work done by M.F.A. graduate, Franaz Golnam. Golnam’s work incorporated 3-D details from flowers into the garments. The collection has a sculptural quality. The garments are enhanced by voluminous panels and seam detailing that is used throughout. The collection’s color palate and fabric incorporates solid grey and black wool and features needle felting details that play with viewers’ perception of depth.

Watching the show my attention was grabbed by the black floral detail used in the majority of the garment, this added a feminine side to the sculptural quality and tied together the collection. I loved the use of structure and the 3-D details. A few of the looks were simple, with a ready to wear quality but still had great detail with free flowing fabrics. Even in black the details were noticed this added detailed touches just in the right places. Throughout the collection there was a cohesiveness of sophisticated femininity and class. The garments weren’t overwhelming in their style do to Golnam knowing exactly where detail and design needed to be added. It’s important to be conscious of the structure of the female form and Golnam did this by down playing the problem areas that most women deal with, with the technique of the seam, while enhancing other area such as the sleeve and the hemline.
